Modbus Poll alternative for Windows

An honest comparison of Busscope Master and Modbus Poll: protocols, TLS, price, license model and where each tool is the better choice.

Facts about Modbus Poll come from the product pages at modbustools.com, read on 6 November 2026. Vendors change their products and prices, so check their site before you decide. We are an independent product and not affiliated with Witte Software.

Why people look for a Modbus Poll alternative

Modbus Poll is a well-known Modbus master simulator that has been on the market for many years. Engineers who look for an alternative usually have one of a few reasons: the price for a small team, a wish to try the software without a purchase, a need for a feature that is missing, or simply curiosity about newer tools. This page compares Busscope Master with Modbus Poll on facts that can be checked, and says plainly where Modbus Poll offers more.

Short version

  • Protocols: Busscope Master speaks Modbus TCP, Modbus/TCP Security (TLS), RTU and ASCII. Modbus Poll lists more variants, including UDP and RTU or ASCII over TCP.
  • Price: Busscope Master starts at $39 per user during the launch period (until 31 December 2026), then $69. Modbus Poll costs $129 for one or two licenses, $119 each for three to nine and $109 each for ten or more, according to its order page.
  • License model: both are perpetual licenses delivered by email.
  • Maturity: Modbus Poll says it has been trusted by customers for over 25 years. Busscope is new, and its feature set is smaller in some areas.

Where Modbus Poll offers more

If you need Modbus over UDP, or RTU or ASCII frames carried over a TCP connection, Modbus Poll lists these variants and Busscope Master does not. If you rely on 28 display formats or on OLE Automation to push values into Excel from a VBA macro, Modbus Poll covers that. A long track record also counts when a tool must be approved by a quality department. These are good reasons to stay with it.

Where Busscope Master fits

Busscope Master is built around a few ideas. First, a short path from install to first reading: run it without a license key, connect and poll. Second, tools for the awkward cases. The Request Runner lets you script a sequence of requests and look at the answers, and the Register Probe finds which addresses a device answers and which it rejects with an illegal address exception, which helps when the register map is missing. Third, serial settings that match real-world adapters, such as echo removal for RS-485 converters that repeat your own request, and RTS toggle for those that need the driver enabled by a control line.

Testing both sides

Modbus Poll is a master, and Modbus Slave is a separate product from the same vendor. Busscope follows the same split: Busscope Master for the client side and Busscope Slave for the server side, each with its own license. Busscope Slave plays several slave ids over Modbus TCP and RTU, lets you edit values while it runs, change them over time and inject faults, so you can see how a master or a PLC program reacts to errors. See Modbus slave simulator for Windows for details.

Price and licenses

Busscope licenses are perpetual and priced per user: $39 for one user, less per user for two to five and for six or more, during the launch period that ends on 31 December 2026. Regular prices are $69, $59 and $50. Each license is delivered by email, and there is a 7-day money-back guarantee, described on the refund page. Prices exclude tax. The current numbers are always on the pricing page.

How to decide

Write down what you must do this month. If the list contains Modbus TCP or RTU polling, writes, charts, logging and a way to read the frames, an evaluation of Busscope Master takes a few minutes and costs nothing. Use the same device you use with your current tool, compare the readings, and check the points that matter to you, such as byte order, timeouts and serial behavior. If your list contains UDP, OLE Automation or one of the other items above, keep Modbus Poll in your toolbox. Many engineers keep two tools anyway, because a second opinion helps when a device behaves oddly.

Other options

There are free tools too, such as the open-source QModMaster and diagslave, and tools for logging and graphs such as ModbusScope. The comparison page lists several of them with facts from their own project pages.

Try Busscope

Run Busscope without a license key to see whether it fits your work. Evaluation mode is for trying the tool, not for production or commercial use.
